Fishing Iron County

Written by ironcountylodging on February 5, 2014

Hello Visitors,

Ever gone out to the lake or driven by on your way down the road and seen people spread among the lake and wondered if it’s any fun to just sit on the ice and wait for a fish to come up? Well the weekend of Feb. 15-16 may just be your chance to take advantage of this great sport!

During this one weekend in February, the Michigan DNR allows families to try out the sport for FREE! All fishing fees will be waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland lakes and the Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish! All fishing regulations per Michigan Law due still apply to all anglers.

For many throughout the state, the annual Free Fishing Weekend has become a tradition-a time to get together with family and friends and enjoy the great outdoors! With ample time to reflect while fishing, there are no limits to variations on a great theme! Many experienced anglers gladly offer their vast knowledge to younger less experienced anglers providing new-comers to the sport a rewarding experience they he or she will remember forever! Many believe people who fish tend to understand the natural aquatic network of plants and animals that will in turn help to sustain fish as well as the regulations that govern fishing in Michigan!

Recent research studies show that the younger generation of people today do not have access to fishing opportunities that were enjoyed by generations before them. Some of the reasons this is happening is due to the areas younger children grow up today, living in urban or suburban areas where fishing access is not readily available, competition for time by an ever-increasing schedule of other activities and too little time for unstructured leisure.

The State of Michigan offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, with more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams. Included are more than 12,000 miles of trout waters, for which approximately 1,000 miles are considered Michigan’s Finest!

So grab a rod and your family and friends, and let’s go FISHING!! Family Fishing
