Heading into Crystal Falls on US 2, just before county road 424 is a little sign that says “Horse Race Rapids”. We’ve driven past this sign many of times before and finally said “what the heck. lets go check it out”, so we hung a right on county airport road and were on our way. Its a scenic drive back into the middle of the woods, it’s really tucked back in the wilderness. When we got to the parking lot we got out of the vehicle and began our 3-5 minute hike. Walking down the path there is some pretty big rock outcrops that block your view of the river, then when you come around one of the outcrops, there it is. Its not much, but its very beautiful. Thinking about a river that over time has cut through this rock to be in the spot it is now, and the looks of it. Nature is truly our greatest splendor here. and it is in abundance.
Horse Race Rapids is just one of many hidden gems of Iron County- Chicagon Falls, Chipmunk Falls, Glidden Falls, Snake rapids, just to name a few!
Come stay and play in Iron County, you wont be disappointed.
