Iron County invites you to visit
Caspian, Crystal Falls, Gaastra, and Iron River, Michigan.

One of Iron County’s many strengths is that it supports all four seasons. Iron County offers the best in year-round Upper Michigan outdoor activities. We have numerous parks, trails, forests, rivers, lakes, snowmobiling trails, fishing, hunting and attractions. When planning your Upper Michigan Vacation, please allow yourself enough time to experience it all!

In the spring, there are nature trails for hiking & Biking, and mushrooming.  We have the Apple Blossom Trail in Iron River providing hikers a great spring time experience.  After a long winter it feels great to stretch and move about again.  Photographers will especially appreciate spring.  The Lake Mary Plains Pathway in Crystal Falls is open to both bikers and hikers.  The Hagerman-Ottawa Lake bike and hike trail is located in southwest Iron County.  The trail is part of the Ottawa National Forest.  Bird watchers love our Iron County area!  Blue jays, cardinals, humming birds, sandpipers, eagles, and more can all be found, viewed and photographed.

Summertime in Iron County is warm, exciting and fun. Water surrounds Iron County with an astounding total of 314 lakes and aproximately 900 miles of rivers in Iron County. The weather averages are anywhere from 60’s to the 80’s, so please check the weather before leaving on your Upper Michigan Vacation. Canoeing and Kayaking are ideal on the Iron River, the Paint River, and the Brule River. We have several canoe and kayak rental facilities along with canoe and kayak trips.

Hiking and Biking are still going strong in the summer. Make sure to bring your camera along with you on your trip to our area. Iron County has great parks for your visit. Pentoga Park is located in Iron County and it home to a Ojibwa Indian Burial Grounds that dates back to the 1800s. Since 1924 it has been preserved and protected.

Iron County offers the best in Upper Michigan Golf Courses and Clubs. Come and experience all three of our exciting courses. Iron River, Crystal Falls and Chicagon Lake (near Iron River) provide guests with the very best in challenging courses, fantastic scenery, hospitality, and fun for all ages. All three Upper Michigan Golf Courses are open to the public.

Iron county boasts an abundance of tree species that participate in the smooth transition of color.  We also have a number of fall festivals to enjoy.  Fishing and Hunting flourishes in late summer and fall.  Ice-fishing is also a great winter activity.  Known through history as one of the most abundant places for wildlife and fish species, the Upper Peninsula continues to harbor a myriad of hunting and fishing opportunities.

Iron County Winter Activities

Downhill Skiing

Iron County offers an immense amount of Upper Michigan Skiiing activities.  Down hill skiing, cross-country skiing, white water tubing, snow shoeing, snow boarding, and sledding are very popular in our area and at Ski Brule “Your Snow Resort!”.

Cross Country Skiing

There are numerous cross-county ski paths.  Ski Brule has a 32km trail system that brings skiers through the forests and over the Brule River Valley.  Accommodates both ski skating and Nordic skiing.

The Ge-Che Cross Country Trail winds around a lake, Brule, and the Ottawa National Forest. The George Young Recreational Complex offers a 10k trail.

The Bear Paw Cross Country Trail at the Listening inn are always a nice work out, we have 14k of groomed tracked trails for the classical skier, beginner to intermediate. Rolling terrain and beautiful scenery is what upper Michigan is all about.

Lake Mary Plains Pathway – Copper Country State Forest: Located just east of Crystal Falls, and off of M69 the Lake Mary Plains Pathway offers over 25 km of well groomed trails. The scenic pathway begins along Glidden Lake and offers loops for beginners (green label) through experts (black label). Trails here are primarily for classical skiers looking for scenery and natural challenges.

Cross Country Skiing

Dog sledding is fun for all ages. Please check the Iron County Events to learn about dates and times.

Ice fishing is also a great family activity. Tip-ups, ice shanties and jigs are the customary way to enjoy this seasonal sport!

Snowmobiling the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the greatest and most exciting sport there is in the the Great Lakes Region! Iron County is a snowmobiler’s paradise! Caspian, Crystal Falls, Gaastra, and Iron River are located in the south central Upper Peninsula. The main hub of our trails are staged in Iron River, Michigan.

Ski Brule has ski slopes to match the expertise of any skier or snowboarder, and is dedicated to offering a family-friendly atmosphere.
