Things get going at 9 a.m. with a day of sidewalk and garage sales, which take place all over town from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. United Lutheran Church will hold a pasty sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., while St. Mark’s Episcopal Church hosts a salad luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Crystal View Golf Course is the site of the youth golf outing, which starts at 9 a.m. For the card players, the Crystal Falls Senior Center will host a cribbage tournament beginning at 1:30 p.m. As afternoon turns into evening, the annual Great Ball Race rolls into action at 5 p.m. on Superior Avenue. The Fungus Fest parade begins at 5:30. This year’s theme is “Up and Down Main Street 100 Years.” The fun continues at 6:30 p.m. as the Finns and the Poles renew their softball rivalry with a pair of contests, featuring the women and the men. The action starts at 6:30 p.m. The evening will close with a fireworks show at the golf course.
Saturday, Aug. 9
Most of Saturday’s activities will be held at Runkle Lake Park, starting with a flea/crafters market beginning at 9 a.m. For those who start to get hungry, a pair of events will satisfy. A pie social will be held at United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s never too early for pizza, and the annual making and baking of the Humungous Fungus Pizza is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Runkle Lake Park. The music of Jan and Gino will provide atmosphere for those dining from noon to 2 p.m. At 1 p.m., the annual buckboard and horseshoe competitions get underway at the park. The Runkle Lake Campground Site Decorating contest begins at 1 p.m. This year’s theme is “Decades.” From 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., it’s time for the return of an old-time favorite, the horse pull. Musical entertainment for the evening will be provided by Crossroads, which will perform from 6 to 10 p.m. The New South Rampart Street Paraders take the stage at the Crystal Theatre at 6 p.m. This will mark the conclusion of this year’s fest. The pancake breakfast, usually held on Sunday morning, has been cancelled. All the events spell humungous fun during the weekend of Aug. 8 and 9
