Thanksgiving is this week and is celebrated by many families in Iron County and all across the country. While the dishes served at the dinner tables may vary from house to house, many of the traditional items on the menu have stuck through the years and are still served today. While many of these items are purchased at your local grocery store, they also may have originated from a local farm in the Midwest region. According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, some of the Midwest states lead in the production of these vegetables that make up the ingredients to your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. In 2013 it was estimated that Illinois harvested 20,100 acres of pumpkins, making up for nearly 40% of the United States total production of the iconic vegetable. Our home state of Michigan produced 6,300 total acres of pumpkins, the third highest state after Illinois & Pennsylvania, respectively.
Take a look at the origins of your vegetables and ingredients to see if they are locally produced. You may even get lucky and be eating some produce grown right here in Iron County.
