This winter has been quite (un)eventful so far. With low snowfall and a chilling cold snap recently sending temperatures plummeting into the single digits, it’s hard not to daydream about sunny beaches! Thankfully, the cold hasn’t deterred visitors from enjoying the winter fun and activities that Iron County has to offer.
Unlike our typical winters, the local snowmobile clubs faced a slow start to grooming trails. However, recent reports from riders indicate that some trails now have a "rock hard and flat" snow base. With the addition of fresh snow, groomers have successfully packed down a solid base, which should help the trails withstand busy traffic and any potential warm-ups—if we ever see warmer temperatures. For the latest snowmobile trail conditions, be sure to check out the Snowmobile Trail Report.
The frigid temperatures have also been a boon for ice fishermen on the local lakes, with reports showing 15-24 inches of ice on most of them! This is a fantastic start to the season, and conditions are likely to improve. So, anglers, dust off your fishing poles, set up your ice shanties, and get ready to catch some trophy fish! Just remember to check with local anglers before venturing out on unfamiliar lakes—safety first!
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails are shaping up nicely around Iron County. Thanks to local clubs and groomers, there are countless kilometers of packed and groomed trails ready for avid skiers. The recent snowfall has provided a fresh layer, enhancing the skiing conditions throughout the area.
For those interested in downhill skiing and snowboarding, Ski Brule is in full swing this winter. With all 17 trails open, there are endless opportunities for skiers of all levels. From gentle beginner slopes to steep advanced trails, Ski Brule offers a great variety of terrain for the whole family.
