The Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center, located in Watersmeet, has begun its summer operating schedule. The Visitor Center is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Ottawa Visitor Center provides an excellent source of information about the local area and recreation opportunities such as camping, hiking, canoeing, maps and more. On Thursday evenings the center hosts free summer programs. Guest speakers provide insight into a variety of subjects including wildlife, heritage, plants and recreation opportunities.
The first Thursday evening program is on June 4 at 7 p.m. Butterflies and moths will be the topic of discussion that is hosted by guest speaker Dr. Thomas Werner from Michigan Tech.
Operated jointly by the USDA-Forest Service and the Ottawa Interpretive Association, the Bear’s Den Gift Shop, located in the Visitor Center, offer many environmental books, unique gifts and other nature-related items for purchase.
Proceeds from these sales go back to the Ottawa National Forest in the form of grants for interpretive projects around the Ottawa.
