Fungus Fest!

The annual Fungus Fest weekend takes place this weekend, Aug. 7 to 9, in and around the Crystal Falls area, with a wide variety of special events all over the city and at Runkle Lake Park.
The celebration starts Friday, Aug. 7, with sidewalk and garage sales all over the city, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents of Crystal Falls, Amasa and Alpha can register to have their sales placed on the map that will be handed out. Which items will you discover along the way?
Also at 9 a.m., a youth golf outing is scheduled at the Crystal View Golf Course. No experience is necessary, and it is free all young golfers.
If you are thinking about lunch, maybe a pasty would hit the spot. United Lutheran Church is holding a pasty sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Cribbage players are invited to battle for honors at a cribbage tournament starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Senior Center.
One of the evening traditions of Fungus Fest is The Great Ball Race, which is held on Superior Avenue at 5 p.m. Will your ball win big prizes?
The Fungus Fest Parade is scheduled at 5:30 on Superior Avenue. This year’s theme is “Anything Pizza.” The parade is followed by a street dance downtown from 6 to 9 p.m. at Crossroads.
Stay around and enjoy the evening, which ends with a fireworks show at dusk at the Crystal View Golf Course.
On Saturday, Aug. 8, a busy day starts with a flea market and crafters sale at Runkle Lake Park, starting at 10 a.m.
That is also when United Methodist Church begins its pie social, which goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
But if pizza and beer is what you would really like, head to Runkle Lake Park for a pizza cookoff among local restaurants, along with microbreweries—all that takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can help decide the best pizza—cast a ballot. Your vote counts!
That is also where the humungous pizza will be created.
Saturday afternoon and evening, Runkle Lake Park will be the place to be from
noon to 2 p.m., Jan and Gino will provide music. Buckboard and horseshoe competition also starts at noon.
In the evening, the annual Finn-Pole softball games are played at the softball diamond: The women’s game is at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game, as the ancient rivalries are renewed.
The final act of Fungus Fest is Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m., when Joshua Davis, a finalist on “The Voice” TV competition, performs at the Crystal Theatre. A 7 p.m. show has also been added.
